Clyde 2-1 Alloa Athletic

Clyde continued their good run of form and moved back into the top half of the cinch League 1 with a victory over Alloa Athletic at Broadwood this afternoon.

Danny Lennon made two changes to the side which took a point from Airdrieonians on Tuesday, with new loan signing Nick McAllister coming in for a debut along with Robert Jones to replace Kevin Nicoll and David Goodwillie.

McAllister had an early chance to open the scoring when he connected with Mark Docherty’s cross into the box, but sent his header just wide of David Hutton’s goal.

At the other end Kevin Cawley tested Neil Parry with a dipping long range effort, which the ‘keeper turned round the post.

Lewis Jamieson and Aaron Splaine showed good skill and close control to work their way into the Alloa box, but a shot by the latter was blocked by an Alloa defender.

Splaine did open the scoring on the 17th minute however, after a goal straight from the training ground. Ally Love looked to be hitting a free-kick, only for Docherty to tap the ball to Splaine during the run up. The midfielder, with his back to goal, turned and hit a low shot under the wall and into the bottom corner of the net.

Jamieson then had an opportunity to double the lead when he drove into the box and cut inside, before curling an effort on target. Hutton though was able to palm it away.

The Wasps had most of the play and chances in the second half as Clyde defended their lead. Conor Sammon chested a long ball down just after the interval then hit a volley towards goal, but Parry turned it behind for a corner.

Parry then made a flurry of saves in quick succession to keep his old team at bay. Cawley was able to twist away from Rumsby and Page in the box before firing an effort on target, but Parry blocked with his foot, then made another fine save from Steven Boyd’s effort moments later.

The Clyde ‘keeper then denied Scott Taggart from distance, before making another excellent reflex save with his fingertips from Boyd’s close range effort.

Sammon came close again with a header, and Adam King took the ball round Parry but chose to shoot from a very narrow angle with his effort coming off the post.

Despite all the pressure by the visitors, it was Clyde who got the second goal with a rare foray into the Alloa half. David Goodwillie was cynically hauled down by Andy Graham whilst through on goal, and from the free-kick Docherty spotted Hutton off his line and went for goal. The Wasps ‘keeper was able to scamper back and get a hand to the ball on the line, but Gregory Tade was the first to follow up to the rebound and poked the ball home.

Alloa’s efforts finally paid off in stoppage time when Scougall got on the end of Sammon’s flick on and slotted beyond Parry, but the strike only proved to be a consolation.
