Clyde A-A Airdrieonians

This afternoon’s cinch League 1 match between Clyde and Airdrieonians was abandoned by referee Barry Cook midway through the second half due to thick fog circling around Broadwood, making visibility difficult. The Diamonds were leading 2-1 at the time.

Danny Lennon made one enforced change to his team from last Saturday’s victory over Alloa Athletic, with Billy Mortimer replacing the injured Paul Kennedy.

The Bully Wee had the ball in the net after just two minutes. Max Currie parried Aaron Splaine’s free-kick and Mortimer was on hand to head home, but the assistant referee deemed him to be offside.

The Diamonds took the lead in the 18th minute after Callum Smith saw his shot come off the post, and Gabby McGill reacted first to prod it home from close range.

Clyde were back on level terms two minutes later. David Goodwillie hooked a cross into the goalmouth, and Robert Jones was there to head the ball into the net, with Mortimer also lurking.

The Bully Wee should have been awarded a penalty five minutes before the interval when Goodwillie was crudely bodychecked in the box, but Barry Cook surprisingly played on, perhaps unsighted by the thickening fog.

Airdrie were back in front within a minute of the second half starting. McGill went through one-on-one with Neil Parry, and the ‘keeper couldn’t stop the effort despite getting a hand to it. McGill was injured in the process of scoring and was stretchered off after a lengthy delay.

By this point the fog was getting worse with action on the far touchline almost impossible to see from the back of the Main Stand. After 53 minutes played, Cook decided to pause the game to see if conditions improved. The fog did lift initially and the game got underway again, but soon deteriorated and the whistler abandoned the match after 66 minutes of action.

The match will be rearranged at a later date, with details to be confirmed in due course.
