Eric Lennon

The club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Eric Lennon last night.

Eric, a Clyde fan for over 60 years who had a strong and lasting love and commitment to The Bully Wee, sadly passed away after a battle with cancer.

Clyde chairman John Taylor said:-

“The news came through just before the final whistle blew at last night’s game against Forfar and it was a very sobering end to the day. While we knew Eric had been ill for some time, with a terminal condition, it still came as a massive shock to us all.

“On a personal basis, I have known and worked with Eric on a whole range of Clyde initiatives, all generated by Eric, and all designed to benefit his beloved club. We have lost far too many from the Clyde family over the last eighteen months and his passing leaves a massive void among all of us who knew him and valued his contribution over a lifetime supporting this club.

“Eric was one of the founder members of the Castlemilk Branch supporters club almost fifty years ago. He was an energetic and enthusiastic member, organising the branch buses to away games and, for a large part of that time, also organising the annual Player of the Year function. A printer to trade, Eric was also massively influential behind the scenes in all of the club’s publications over the years.”

Ownership Director Gordon Nisbet added:-

“My lasting memory will be that whenever I told someone that I was a Clyde fan, regardless of my geographical location, the response was ‘you must know Eric Lennon then’ – and that has been the case for the last 50 years.

“I was lucky enough to know him through the Print Union SOGAT and it was Eric who first encouraged me in my dalliance with the Clyde View match programme. He will be a sad loss to all who knew him and Clyde FC and Eric Lennon will be forever linked.”

Manger Danny Lennon, who had sent Eric a video message of support some weeks ago, said:-

“When we got back into the dressing room after the game and the news filtered through, the boys all wanted to dedicate our victory over Forfar Athletic to Eric. He was a fine man who loved this wonderful club.”

The deepest condolences from all at Clyde FC go out to wife Ann, sons Paul and Christopher and all of Eric’s family and friends at this difficult time.

A further tribute to Eric will be published in the next edition of the Clyde View.
