Chris Praises Outstanding Team Effort

Chris McStay spoke to the press following Saturday’s 3-2 win over Queen of the South in the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge Cup.

The midfielder firstly talked about the team character to come back from two goals down, against a team from a higher league.

“I thought the boys were absolutely outstanding for the full 90 minutes,” he said. “I thought it was harsh to be 2-0 down, but when you’re playing against a quality side you’re going to get punished for your mistakes. We did well to come back from that.

“We definitely thought we could get back into the game, we’ve done it before. Even though we were playing against a high quality team we still believed we could do it again and we just kept pushing on. We came in at half-time disappointed to be down as we thought it was a pretty balanced game.”

The 23-year-old scored the first Clyde goal in some style, as he found the back of the net with a fantastic overhead kick. He continued:-

“I don’t think they come around too often! I’m delighted with the goal, but that was just one of the three that won us the game. The two goals after it were just as important.

“Trying the overhead kick was all that I was thinking about when the ball came to me to be honest, I thought I’d flick it up and give it a shot. Being 2-0 down, it was worth the gamble and it came off. I’ve never really tried it before to be honest and it’s a tough one to practise. Goodie played me a good pass, so it was just about setting myself up nicely and focusing on the technique.”

Chris spoke about how this win could affect the league campaign when it resumes this week:-

“The main thing now is to carry that into the league. We did well against Falkirk and Forfar, where I felt that we should have won. This was about carrying on from that and now it’s about building into the next game. We’re looking forward to Stranraer at home.”

Finally, McStay mentioned how the team were finding the step up from League 2 to League 1 so far:-

“As I said before, when you play against better quality you’ll get punished for your mistakes, so it’s mainly been about limiting them. All of the boys are finding the step up alright, as we’re a quality team as it is. We have just as good a chance as the other teams do.”
