Under-20s: Stranraer 11-2 Clyde

The under-20s suffered a heavy and very disappointing defeat on Sunday, as they lost 11-2 away to Stranraer in the Development League West.

Ronan Sweeney got on the scoresheet for Clyde, as did Aaron Millar from the penalty spot.

Tony McNally spoke to the official website after the game:-

“Under no circumstances should any Clyde side, at any level, be losing in that manner regardless of injuries or ages. It’s totally unacceptable and myself, the coaching staff, and the club will not tolerate this type of performance. The players know this.

“I’ll take nothing away from Stranraer, who played some good football and punished us.

“Myself and Ian Currie looked to sit back and asked the boys to work hard. With two under-20s on the first team bench in the past couple of weeks, we wanted more of the boys to show and earn the right to experience the first team environment on a matchday. To myself and Ian’s disappointment, this wasn’t applied.

“The most important thing we measure success against is if the players are good enough to get in first team. Yes, results are also important from the players’ perspective because you want to win and we want to create a winning mentality from a young age.

“To play and lose the way we did is not being let go easily by myself and Ian. The players were given a few honest and strong words after the game; nowadays I think young players get let off with far too much and don’t appreciate the opportunity they have. For me, most young players don’t work hard enough, think they know best, and it makes the youth coaches job so much harder.

“The three key values I demand from young players is attitude, respect and discipline – on and off the pitch. Long term, this is what we will instil in the young players at the club.”
