Under-20s: Morton 5-1 Clyde

Clyde’s under-20 team came away from Cappielow last night with a disappointing 5-1 defeat, in the second match in the 2017-18 Development League West campaign.

The Bully Wee team featured some overage players ahead of a blank weekend for the first team, lining up against an experienced Greenock Morton side.

The Ton started the game on the front foot, but Clyde grew into the game and two of the best early chances. Firstly, with the ball breaking to Aaron Millar in the box, but his effort was saved by the home ‘keeper. Quickly after that, a bursting run into the box by Jordan Lowdon led to his shot being pushed behind for a corner.

However, Morton took a two-goal lead with a quick double, before Clyde got back into the game just before the break, with Darren Miller slotting home a penalty to make it 2-1.

Early in the second half, Morton extended their lead and went on to complete a comfortable 5-1 scoreline.

After taking in his first match as under-20s coach, Tony McNally spoke to the official website:-

“I was pleased with parts of the play and spells of the game. It was pleasing to see Jordan Lowdon continue his recovery and Blair Currie did very well, despite what the scoreline was. On the younger players, I was impressed with Chris Martin, who put in a decent defensive performance, and also Robbie Davidson who made some good attacking play in spells of the game too.

“We have a good base to work from and, alongside the first team staff, I’m looking to work hard on developing and making this area of to club stronger to achieve our aim, which is developing young players so that they are good enough and ready to step up to the first team.

“I’m looking forward to getting on the training pitch with the lads and start to build a strong Clyde under-20 squad going forward.”

The under-20s next match is on Sunday, against Albion Rovers in the First Round of the Scottish Youth Cup. Kick-off is at 2.30pm at Cliftonhill.
