Clyde 2-1 Annan Athletic
The Bully Wee kicked off the 2017-18 season with a 2-1 win over Annan Athletic at Broadwood this afternoon, in Group E of the Betfred Cup. All three goals came in the second half, with Jack Breslin and David Goodwillie (pictured) netting for Clyde, before Steven Swinglehurst bagged a late consolation for the visitors.
Jim Chapman handed starts to seven of his summer signings in his first match in charge of the club, with another five new recruits on the bench.
With the game being played in poor conditions, both sides struggled to create too many opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. The first clear chance fell to Annan, as Moxon Owen found himself free in the box but couldn’t keep his header from going over the bar.
The visitors then had another chance from a free-kick, when Martin McNiff was booked for a challenge on the edge of the box. However, Aidan Smith’s low effort flew just wide of the post and the scores remained level. Annan continued to pressure the Clyde defence up until half-time, but couldn’t find a way to open the scoring.
The Bully Wee almost had a great start to the second half as David Goodwillie chased down a poor header back to goal, but he wasn’t quite able to beat the ‘keeper to the ball.
Smith had another chance for The Galabankies but fired his effort over the bar.
Clyde then went in front just before the hour mark. Darren Miller’s deflected cross found David Gormley, who saw his header well saved, with Breslin was on hand to head the rebound into the net.
With less than ten minutes to go, substitute Smart Osadolor’s pass managed to find Goodwillie and the striker struck the ball into the net to double the lead.
Annan then grabbed a consolation in injury time, after Osadolor sliced a clearance and left Swinglehurst with an easy task of poking the ball beyond Currie from close range.
