Albion Rovers 1-2 Clyde
The Bully Wee ended their Betfred Cup campaign on a high note this evening, with a fine comeback victory at a rain-soaked Cliftonhill.
Barry Ferguson made two changes to the team following Saturday’s draw with Berwick, with Sean Higgins and Jamie Watson coming in for David Gormley and Peter MacDonald in attack.
The first clear-cut chance of the match fell to the home side, but Mark Ferry’s attempt to flick the ball over John Gibson missed the target.
At the other end, Dylan Easton was unlucky to see his free-kick from 25 yards drift just past the top corner of the home goal.
As half-time approached, Albion had two good chances to take the lead, with Ross Davidson forcing Gibson into an excellent low save and a sliding Paul Willis being just unable to reach a low cross at the back post.
Clyde started the second half well and Easton’s dipping shot went over the bar, before Watson’s clever volley went wide by a yard.
However, against the run of play, The Wee Rovers were able to find a gap in the middle of the Clyde defence and Davidson took advantage by slipping the ball under the advancing Gibson and into the net.
The Bully Wee came back strongly again though and, with 73 minutes on the clock, Ewan McNeil (pictured) scored a superb equaliser and his first goal for the club. Substitute Gormley placed the ball in his path and he burst forward to the edge of the box and drilled a shot into the bottom corner.
Scott McLaughlin then hit the target with a direct free-kick that was well saved by Ross Stewart, before Albion’s Gary Fisher blasted the ball over the bar after a first shot had been blocked in the Clyde box.
In injury time, Easton managed to get to a loose ball first and force Davidson into a stretching tackle, which resulted in the referee awarding a penalty. The midfielder stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, to secure three points towards the final Group H standings.
In tonight’s other match in Group H, Kilmarnock came back from two goals down to win 3-2 at Berwick Rangers.
