Joe Gilroy Receives Salver

Former Clyde player Joe Gilroy has been formally presented with a commemorative salver, following the induction of the entire 1966-67 squad to the club’s Hall of Fame in 2014.

Joe now lives in Australia and was therefore unable to attend the induction event last year. However, club historian Gordon Sydney is currently in Australia and took the chance to meet Joe at his home in Brisbane.

Joe returned an excellent goal tally of 44 from 106 appearances during his time with The Bully Wee, between 1964 and 1967. He then went on to have spells at Fulham and Dundee before ending his playing career in South Africa

Gordon said, “Joe was part of the 66-67 team that finished third in the league, took the all-conquering Celtic to a replay in the Scottish Cup semi-final and qualified for the Inter City Fairs Cup – albeit that we weren’t allowed to participate.

“With him not being at the Hall of Fame event, all I could do was send him the salver, the ‘Unsung Heroes’ book and a few other items. This was the perfect opportunity to address that and do it in person.”

Joe still retains a great interest in Clyde issues, both on and off the park, and sent his best wishes to everyone connected with the club.
