Tommy Celebrates 80th Birthday
Saturday was a great day for The Bully Wee thanks to a fine win over Elgin City and it was also an important day for one of the club’s all-time legends.
Tommy McCulloch, the former Clyde goalkeeper of nearly 500 matches, was celebrating his 80th birthday.
McCulloch joined Clyde in 1957 and won the Scottish Cup in his first season with the club, keeping a clean sheet in the final against Hibernian. He went on to become one of Clyde’s greatest servants, spending 15 years with the club and making 475 appearances in all competitions. He was officially inducted into the Clyde FC Hall of Fame in 2011.
Clyde director Bobby Gracey attended Tommy’s birthday party and, on behalf of the club, presented him with a signed goalkeeper shirt and a commemorative letter to mark his special occasion.
Bobby said, “Tommy was in shock when I first arrived at his home and by the end of the speech he clearly had a tear in his eyes, which proves just how much Clyde FC still means to him today. It was a complete honour to meet Tommy and be part of his celebration. It is so important that being part of the wider Clyde family amounts to more than just words.”
The club has since heard from the Tommy, who commented: “It was a pleasure to have played with Clyde and be a part of the club’s history. Clearly the values and traditions of the club are being maintained under the current stewardship. I hope the efforts to establish Clyde back to its former glories are successful.”
Tommy’s son, who on the night alleged to be an even better player than his Dad, added: “Once again, sincere thanks from our family for the club’s time and thoughts. Over the years, Clyde have never missed an opportunity to pay tribute to guys like my Dad. It’s part of who they are and he has always appreciated it.”
