Clyde 2-1 Berwick Rangers
A late goal by John Sweeney clinched a victory for The Bully Wee today, during a closely fought IRN-BRU Third Division match at Broadwood.
Jim Duffy made two changes to the team that lost at Elgin during the week, with Kevin Watt and Stef McCluskey coming in for Kieran McGachie and Marc McCusker.
The visitors were the first to come close to scoring and Jamie Barclay pulled off a terrific save to prevent a header from finding the roof of the net. His good form continued with another sharp stop from a snap shot from inside the penalty area.
As the half progressed, it was Clyde that were winning the territory battle but chances on goal were limited.
However, shortly before half-time, the deadlock was broken. Kevin Watt received a pass at the edge of the box and did well to make space for himself before squeezing a low shot into the corner of the net.
The Wee Rangers were quick to put pressure on Clyde after the break and equalised on 53 minutes. A deep cross from the left wing was met by Steven Notman and his volley made it past Barclay to make it 1-1.
Kieran Macdonald’s free-kick forced a good save by Mark McCallum and, from the rebound, the away ‘keeper was also able to block an effort by Watt. At the other end, Neil Janczyk was unlucky to see his curling shot hit the bar and Barclay earned credit again with a fine double save.
Although Berwick had the best of the overall play in the second half, the three points would go to The Bully Wee as Sweeney notched another late goal. As a cross into the box was partially cleared, the midfielder was in the right place to put a lovely volley past McCallum and earn a Clyde win.
