Clyde 1-2 Berwick Rangers

Clyde’s Scottish Cup campaign came to an early end at Broadwood this afternoon, as Berwick edged through to the Third Round.

The Bully Wee started the match in positive fashion and were unlucky not to take the lead when Kevin Finlayson’s first-time effort crashed back off the inside of the post.

Clyde’s dominance continued but so did the bad luck as John Stewart took a turn to hit the woodwork. The striker lobbed the onrushing away ‘keeper, only to see the ball bounce off the face of the bar.

However, almost immediately afterwards Berwick created their first opportunity of the match and it led to Gribben somehow missing from six yards.

The visitors were more of a force after the half-time break and Craig O’Reilly missed a glorious chance to score when he completely missed a back post header, with the goal gaping.

The deadline was broken just after the hour mark though. Paul Currie was offered a free header inside the box and he placed it into the far corner, past the diving Jordan Allan.

It wasn’t long until the score was doubled. A mistake by Ally Park led to Paul McMullan advancing towards goal and his deflected shot crept into the net via the underside of the bar.

Clyde fought back, with John Sweeney seeing his long-range effort ping off the post. This time the rebound fell kindly to Kevin Finlayson, who rolled the ball home to make it 1-2.

There was still time for more action at either end. Allan produced a wonderful stop to keep out a fizzing drive and, incredibly, The Bully Wee hit the woodwork for a fourth time. Stewart was again the unlucky man as his header bounced off the bar.
