Clyde 1-2 Rangers

The Clyde squad completed its pre-season schedule last night, with a difficult test against Rangers in front of 2687 at Broadwood.

The Gers featured first team stars such as Madjid Bougherra, Kenny Miller, Sasa Papac, Steven Naismith and Steven Whittaker in their starting line-up. The Bully Wee’s squad was similar to the one that faced Cowdenbeath on Saturday, but also included two trialists in midfield.

With such a strong team on the pitch, Rangers were well on top in the opening spell of the match and soon raced into a two-goal lead. Naismith scored the first with a cool finish from inside the box and strike-partner Miller made it 0-2 soon afterwards. The Scotland forward latched onto a neat ball over the top by Jordan McMillan and finished well.

Ibrox youngster John Fleck was then carried off the field in some distress, after appearing to turn or twist awkwardly.

Lone striker Marc McCusker produced Clyde’s best moment of the first half when his powerful run ended in a shot that forced Neil Alexander into a good save.

Changes in personnel and tactics for both sides at half-time had an immediate effect on the match, as the Bully Wee scored soon after the restart. Willie Sawyers was the creator as his cross was well finished from close range by John Stewart.

Clyde enjoyed increased pressure on the away goal for the remainder of the half but couldn’t register an equaliser. At the other end, Andrius Velicka was unlucky not to score with a fine effort that came crashing back off the post.

The encounter was certainly a very beneficial one for the Bully Wee and the club would like to thank everyone connected with Rangers FC for their participation in the friendly.
