Clyde 2-1 Cowdenbeath

Clyde marched on to the Second Round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at Broadwood today, thanks to a terrific victory over First Division Cowdenbeath.

The Bully Wee started the match well and looked the more likely to score in the opening exchanges. Kevin Finlayson and Murray Henderson both had chances with back post headers, before John Sweeney saw his long-range effort superbly saved by David Hay.

Towards the end of the half, it was the visitors that started pushing for a goal but the Clyde defence held firm.

With the second half evenly poised, two wonderful goals by Marc McCusker in a ten-minute spell set up a home victory.

On 58 minutes, the striker turned at the edge of the box and bulleted a shot into the top corner of the net.

The return of a feel-good factor to Broadwood was tangible as McCusker soon recorded a brilliant second goal, powering past two players before drilling a shot in off the post.

The Blue Brazil responded and grabbed a goal with twelve minutes left when Ramsay found space in the box to head past JC Hutchison.

The closing period of the game saw the Fife side throw men forward while Clyde posed a threat of getting a clincher on the break, which saw the entertaining match end in typical cup tie fashion.

The full-time whistle signalled a winning start to the home competitive action for the coaching staff and the players – and, of course, entry into this week’s seeded draw for the Second Round of the competition.
