Background: Stuart Millar

Stuart started his career at Celtic Boys Club, before making his break in the senior game with Airdrie. He became the Diamonds’ second youngest scorer ever when he found the net against Dunfermline shortly before his 18th birthday.

Still a teenager, he then spent a year with Dundee. Stuart didn’t make any first team appearances at Dens Park but continued to learn the game as a regular in the reserves, under the guidance of manager Archie Knox.

A season at Montrose followed and he was named the Gable Endies’ Player of the Year before he made the switch to Shawfield in 1986. Then Clyde boss Craig Brown was sufficiently impressed to pay a five-figure sum for his services, but it was to be Brown’s last signing before he made way for John Clark to take over.

Another happy time followed for Stuart though, as he played in over 100 matches for the club and was a popular figure amongst the support.

In 1989, he moved abroad for a season with Evegoras Phaphos in the Cypriot First Division, before returning home for stints with Alloa Athletic and Dumbarton. At the latter, he earned a Second Division championship medal, before hanging up his boots after a 16-year career.

It wasn’t long until Stuart moved into coaching and, in 1995, he took the reigns at Carluke Rovers with great success. After lifting Rovers from the bottom of the Junior game to the First Division, he switched to Cumbernauld United in 1998 and again made a lasting impact. In a five-year tenure at Guys’ Meadow, he lifted the club to the Super League, not to mention two appearances in a Scottish Cup Quarter-Final.

In 2003, Stuart teamed up with Neil at Stranraer, as they became assistant manager and manager respectively. The Blues had just been relegated to the Third Division, but the duo turned the club around and won back-to-back promotions as they reached the heights of the First Division.

Millar worked with Neil again at Ayr United in 2006-07, before they left the club in the promotion play-off hunt and after a Challenge Cup Semi-Final.

Most recently, Stuart has been working as chief scout and match assessor for high-flying Ross County, a position he has held for three years.
