Clyde v Montrose clashes have been infrequent events in recent years; it’s nine years since they last competed against each other on League business.

In March 1996 Clyde surrendered a 1-0 half-time lead to eventually lose by three goals
to one at Broadwood. That defeat came just a couple of weeks after the Bully Wee had stormed to a 3-0 half-time lead at Links Park before the never-say-die “Dynamo” scored twice to make it a very uncomfortable second half for the eventual winners from Cumbernauld.

It truly was a season to forget for both clubs as Montrose were relegated to the Third Division and Clyde limped home in fifth positionin the Second.

The last time Clyde met Montrose in the League Cup was back in 1973 when they were part of the same sectional group. Home advantage prevailed at Shawfield but the points were shared at Links Park. Results from other sectional ties ensured that Clyde reached the knock-out quarter final stage, where they lost 3-2 on aggregate to eventual trophy winners Dundee.

Coming back to the present day, the forthcoming cup tie provides ex-Clyde defender Paul Doyle with an early opportunity to return to Broadwood since he became a Montrose player on a permanent basis during the summer, having spent the 2004/05 season on loan to the Angus club.
