Fancy Becoming A Referee?

Following an item in a recent edition of the Bully Wee-mail, Clyde’s electroinic mailing list, William Lindsay, the Press Officer for the SFA referees in Stirlingshire has again asked Clyde to help in the drive to recruit new football referees, both male and female.

William points out that there is a shortage of referees at all levels of the game and, on some weekends, matches have been cancelled due to this shortage. We are more than happy to reproduce the Stirlingshire referees’ message:

Stirlingshire refereeing movement can now proudly boast that they have three Class 1 referees following the promotion of Stephen Finnie during the close season. Stephen now joins David Somers and Ian Frickleton, who regularly referee at the senior level in Scotland.

They all started a refereeing by attending a twelve week training class and then progressed through the different grades of football.

Their success can be put down to dedication to refereeing and the refereeing association, regular coaching and attendance at fitness training. Unfortunately we do not have any female referees officiating at senior level; we want more female referees to follow the example of Morag Pirie from Aberdeen, who is now an Assistant Referee.

The opportunities for female referees are tremendous especially with the high profile of the women’s game and women’s World Cup being televised.

A new twelve week training class will start on 23 August 2004 and this could be the start of your career as a football referee. If you would like to be a part of the new class or would like more information then please contact one of the following contact names:
