Recap
Clyde comfortably overcame Queen of the South this afternoon to move ahead of Ross County in the table and keep in touch with the mid-table pack. Both Airdrie and Queen of the South are now 8 points behind Clyde and 5 adrift of County.
Clyde kept the same line-up that convincingly beat Ross County last week, with Ryan McCann being drafted onto the bench, instead of Gary Arbuckle. After the dramatic start to the recent cup game between the sides, which saw Queens net twice early on, Clyde were determined not to give the home side an early advantage and some robust challenges by Higgins and Malone received bookings from referee Brian Winter. Queens had the first attempt on goal from a freekick by Dermot McCaffrey that was comfortably held by Peter Cherrie.
The passing game which Clyde play with ease started to click into gear and a superb chance was carved out for Stephen O’Donnell, who fired over the bar when well placed following a fortunate deflection. There were two more bookings – a harsh yellow for McKeown as well as one for the energetic Dougie Imrie as things threatened to get out of control. Fortunately the referee then got full control of the game and some nice football followed.
After a large spell of possession, Clyde took a deserved lead from an Eddie Malone corner. The ball looped to the back post where Imrie headed home from close range. Queens will feel they should have defended it better, however it was a good delivery, which was well attacked by Imrie.
The second half was totally dominated by Clyde with O’Donnell prominent in most attacks. He was involved in one of the sitters of the season – a long range strike was extravagantly stopped by Corr, only for Malone to hit the rebound straight against the ‘keepers legs from 4 yards with the goal gaping. 5 minutes later, Neil McGregor spoilt a near flawless display by firing wildly over after Corr spilled a cross.
Roddy Hunter, a half-time substitute for Andy Ferguson, then lobbed over when clean through on goal. In truth, he should have left the ball to the better placed O’Donnell but the young strikers effort and touch throughout the half will have moved him closer to a regular starting role.
After all these missed chances, it seemed inevitable that Queens would punish Clyde, however only a weak Scott Robertson shot troubled Cherrie. The referee had evened up the card count, with bookings for Lauchlan, Robertson and Callaghan.
Just as it seemed like a nervous last 10 minutes were likely, Clyde finally killed the game off with a clinical move. A loose pass was intercepted by Paul McHale and he quickly moved the ball onto Imrie, who had finally beaten the offside trap. The finish was deadly – a right footed strike into the bottom corner for his 4th goal in 3 matches at Palmerston.
The last 10 minutes saw no real action, although Joe Miller took the chance to give McCann and Steven Masterton a run-out, replacing O’Donnell and the hardworking Craig Bryson.
Overall, Clyde were comfortable winners. The defence is looking much more at ease with the McKeown – McGregor – Higgins line-up and the midfield again gave their opponents the run around. Up front, Imrie led the line superbly and took both of his goals well.
