Clyde returned to winning ways with a fine victory over Peterhead at Broadwood today, following an entertaining match that featured plenty of chances for both sides.

Following the midweek defeat to Queen’s Park, Jim Duffy added Kevin Watt, Kevin Nicoll and Pat Scullion to the starting line-up.

The Bully Wee were first to come close to scoring when Scullion hit the bar. The big forward was extremely unlucky to see his 20 yard volley bounce out off the woodwork. A lovely pass by Stuart McColm then released Kevin Watt through on goal, but the striker’s effort was blocked by away ‘keeper Graeme Smith’s legs.

As the action continued, former Clyde man Bryan Gilfillan hit the bar at the other end with a header and David Cox’s rasping shot forced Jamie Barclay into a good save.

Before the half-time break, there was still time for Stef McCluskey to see a goal-bound effort blocked and Cox hit the bar once more, with a long range attempt that almost found the net.

The second half was similarly well contested and Gilfillan had another chance to score, but he delayed his shot and the chance was lost.

Watt then spurned another great chance to break the deadlock when he got on the end of a pinpoint low cross by McColm, but the striker didn’t make a clean connection and the ball spun away from Smith’s goal.

Thankfully though, with 65 minutes on the clock, Watt was able to take the next opportunity that came his way. John Sweeney – making his 100th appearance for the club – sent a long throw into the box and Scullion’s flick allowed Watt to bundle the ball into the net from close range.

The match was clinched by a second goal with five minutes left to play. A mix up in the Blue Toon defence led to the ball being knocked over Smith and towards the empty goal. As sub Kieran McGachie tried to reach it, he was pulled down by Ryan Strachan and the ref quickly awarded a penalty and a red card. Sweeney stepped up and found the bottom corner, sealing a much-needed victory for The Bully Wee.
