Recap

For the second successive game Clyde entertained a team from Dundee however the circumstances were much different this time around. Dundee traveled to meet a Clyde team led by Dougie Bell and Gary Bollan on league business. The shock resignation of Colin Hendry the night before clearly affected the players and they showed from the off that the Bully Wee would not be bullied.

Although chances were almost non-existant, Clyde were certainly up for the game and were showing a commitment and energy following on from the cup game. Christian Smith was in particular putting himself about, and can probably count himself fortunate not to find his way into the referee’s notebook for persistent fouling. Stevie Masterton was not so fortunate and picked up a booking on 33 minutes for a crude challenge on ex team mate Malone. Possibly a yellow was harsh considering it was his first foul and was poorly timed at worst. The harshness of the booking was realized 5 minutes later when McKenzie flattened Arbuckle with nothing other than a forearm smash. The referee however saw nothing untoward and waved play on.

Dundee were marginally better than Clyde in creating chances, mostly coming from Malone’s left foot. One of his corner’s actually had Hutton scrambling to clear. 4 minutes from half time and Dundee almost took the lead when Robertson burst into the box, but Sturm’s shot was well saved by the feet of Hutton.

The second half would probably see he most excitement and enjoyment for a long time at Broadwood, as Clyde really took the game to Dundee.

However things could have been different only eight minutes into the half. A long ball over the top by Davidson saw Sturm burst clear, but appear to trip himself up under close attention from Neil McGregor who was actually appealing for offside. When the referee blew for a foul, Clyde fans feared the worst, but the referee only saw fit to book McGregor.

A minute later and a good break by Imrie saw his pass to MacLennan inadvertently stopped by Arbuckle, who then played the ball out wide to MacLennan, losing the advantage. The youngster was tackled well in the box, but the ball fell kindly to Masterton who fired inches wide.

On 11 minutes, Swankie would become the first Dundee player booked for a nasty straight-legged challenge on McGowan.

The controversy started on 65 minutes, when after fine hold up play by Arbuckle, he fed the ball into the box to MacLennan, who cut inside Palenik and looked to have been brought down, but again the referee saw nothing untoward and waved play on.

On 24 minutes, more controversy. Clyde broke from a Dundee corner when covering McHale could only head a Masterton clearance high in the air. Arbuckle brought the ball down superbly and headed goal wards with Imrie on the right and Bradley on the left spare, he cut inside McHale and played in Imrie. McHale then made a shocking tackle on Arbuckle, and the ref pulled play back with Imrie through on goal. McHale was very fortunate only to receive a yellow, and for some reason the advantage rule was not deemed applicable. The decision saw almost all Clyde players protest furiously, and stand in manager Dougie Bell’s protestations were not missed by the linesman, who put his flag up for ref Conroy to send Bell to the stand.

Imrie came close from the free kick via a second chance after his initial shot was blocked, but the sense of injustice in the home crowd was all too apparent.

Justice was done seconds later, when Samson’s poor goal kick went straight to Arbuckle thirty yards out. He took a good touch towards goal, but his second touch seemed to push him too wide, but much like his performance on the day, he showed enough skill to beat Samson for a well deserved lead.

2 minutes later and Dundee brought towering striker Zemlik on for Sturm.

More controversy 2 minutes later when a harmless looking jostle for the ball between remaining dugout coaches Bollan and Farrell amazingly saw them sent to the stands to complete the compliment of coaches watching from behind the technical area.

Christian Smith finally found his way into the book with 7 minutes to go for one foul too many.

Clyde had a good chance to seal the game with 5 minutes to go when the impressive Imrie sped clear, but running on the right flank, he was always going to cut back to his favoured left foot, and although his shot was well hit, Samson saved.

With two minutes to go there was yet more controversy. After referee Conroy had awarded a soft looking foul against Arbuckle, Dundee center half McKenzie appeared to clearly kick Bradley off the ball. The punishment was surprisingly only a yellow for McKenzie and Bradley joined him in the referee’s book.

Disaster struck from the free kick, as Malone’s excellent delivery found Davidson at the back post, whose volley hit off the head of Palenik and straight into the net to give the promotion challengers a point they scarcely deserved.
