Danny’s Tribute to John Fleming
The club was saddened to learn of the death of John Fleming this week, after a prolonged illness.
John was a former category one match official, taking part in the UEFA Euro ’96 tournament, and later became the Scottish FA’s Head of Referee Operations, a post that he held for eight years.
Clyde manager Danny Lennon paid his own tribute, emphasising the respect that he had for John. He said:-
“I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of John at the age of only 62. I had a very positive working relationship with him. He was always approachable, honest and looking to educate you, which I greatly appreciated.
“The education and coaching I received from him in our discussions has helped me to be a better coach and understand the beautiful game more. Far too often referees are publicly and harshly criticised for their role. They have the most difficult job in football and they are incredibly brave and professional in providing the vital service they do in order for us to enjoy our football.
“John Fleming’s professionalism and character were an example to us all and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew him and will miss him.”
