Sam Millar

Sun, 15th Sep 2019 8:52pm

It was with a sense of shock, and great sadness, that the club yesterday received news of the passing of former player Sam Millar, following a short battle with cancer.

Sam's part in Clyde's successful 1972-73 Second Division Championship winning season was rightly marked in the book 'From Tears to Cheers' and the subsequent Legends Lunch where he was present. Indeed, whilst his overall contribution greatly helped The Bully Wee to win the Second Division all those years ago, it was Sam who scored the goal that won the title, firing a shot from distance to secure a 1-0 win over Clydebank at Kilbowie Park, in the penultimate game of the season.

Sam started off in midfield, was converted to a centre-forward, but reverted back to a midfield berth later in his career. He played in a total of 154 games for Clyde, scoring 29 goals and also contributing many assists thanks to his clever play.

A more detailed obituary and tribute to Sam will appear in the next edition of the Clyde View, published for the game v Montrose on 5th October.

The condolences of all at Clyde Football Club go out to Sam's family at this difficult time.
