Stranraer 1-3 Clyde

Tue, 24th Jul 2018 9:46pm

The Bully Wee registered a fine away win in the Betfred Cup this evening, overcoming League 1 side Stranraer thanks largely to a clinical opening period of the match.

Danny Lennon made four changes to his starting line-up, with Martin McNiff, Scott Rumsby, Ray Grant and John Rankin all coming into the team.

It took just two minutes for David Goodwillie to open the scoring and his goal account for the season, when he got on the end of Jordan Stewart's diagonal ball behind the defence, and cushioned a shot across Max Currie off the inside of the post.

Goodwillie then got his second of the evening midway through the first-half. John Rankin threaded a ball through the Stranraer back-line, and the striker placed his shot across Currie and into the back of the net again, from a similar position.

The Bully Wee were three goals up just after the half-hour mark. Martin McNiff, who had been denied by Currie earlier in a game, headed the ball home following a pinpoint delivery from Chris McStay's free-kick.

McStay almost made it 4-0 shortly after, but his half-volley whistled narrowly past the post.

Stranraer pulled a goal back eleven minutes after the interval when Grant Anderson was first to react to a loose ball in the box, and powered a shot past Blair Currie.

Clyde had chances to increase their lead but were denied on two occasions by the woodwork, with Kevin Nicoll's header clipping the bar, and the post prevented Goodwillie from walking off with the match ball, following a fine run and attempt which had Currie beaten.
