Clyde 1-1 Arbroath

Tue, 22nd Mar 2011 11:31pm

The Bully Wee took a well-earned point from league leaders Arbroath this evening, after an entertaining IRN-BRU Third Division match at Broadwood.

Aleks Gramovics was added to the Clyde midfield and he was joined in the team by last-minute signing Jamie McCluskey, who slotted in at left-wing.

The opening half of the match was a closely contested affair with little to choose between the teams - albeit with few chances at either end. John Sweeney came close for the Bully Wee when he pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box, but his shot flew just over the bar.

Clyde started the second half well and the match burst into life on the hour mark when Marc McCusker had a glorious chance to open the scoring. A terrible mistake by Red Lichties 'keeper Darren Hill gifted the ball to John Stewart in the box. His pass found McCusker who looked certain to find the net but his shot missed the target with Hill stranded.

Teams often get punished for those sort of moments and Arbroath did just that to their hosts only seconds later, as they broke upfield. A cross from the left evaded Ricky Waddell and Josh Falkingham was able to guide a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

The Bully Wee's frustration continued as another great chance wasn't converted. McCusker did brilliantly to work his way towards goal but his cutback slipped behind Stewart and was cleared to safety.

Willie Sawyers entered the play from the bench and was quickly to play a big part in the match. A free-kick was nodded down by Ross McMillan (pictured) and Sawyers was in the right place to prod the ball into the roof of the net to make it 1-1.

The match looked as though it could go either way at this stage but the visitors suffered a blow after 78 minutes, with Darran Thomson seeing a straight red card for a reckless challenge on McCusker.

However, there were no more goals and both sides had to settle for a single point as the full-time whistle blew.
