SFL Media Release - First Division Play-Offs

Wed, 23rd Apr 2008 6:06pm

The club has this evening received a statement from the SFL. Here it is in full:-

As you will be aware, this Saturday sees the final round of matches in this season’s IRN-BRU Scottish Football League Championship and this will be followed by the various promotion/relegation Play-Off matches scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 30th April, Saturday, 3rd May, Wednesday, 7th May and Saturday, 10th May, 2008.

In accordance with SFL Rule 31.4.2 the second lowest placed club in the First Division will play the fourth placed club in the Second Division in the First Division Play-Off Semi-Finals on a home and away knock-out basis and these matches are scheduled for 30th April and 3rd May, 2008. However, after the completion of last Saturday’s IRN-BRU First Division matches, both Morton F.C. and Clyde F.C. had attained 34 points each, with Morton F.C. being placed eighth and Clyde F.C. ninth in the table due to Morton F.C. having a slightly better goal difference.

Dependent on this Saturday’s results, the possibility exists that the respective playing records of both clubs could be identical in terms of points gained, goal difference and goals for. In this regard, the terms of SFL Rules 30.1.1 and 30.1.2 state as follows:-

"30.1.1
In all cases, should two or more clubs be equal on points, the club or clubs with the better or best goal difference shall be considered nearer or nearest the top.  In the event of the goal difference also being equal, in terms of paragraph 30.1.2 hereof in cases involving the determination of any divisional championship promotion or relegation issues, or qualification for other competitions, the clubs shall play a deciding game, or games in such manner and under such conditions as the Management Committee may decide.  In all other cases, the clubs shall be deemed to have finished in equal positions.

30.1.2
In all competitions where goal difference is referred to, the said goal difference shall be ascertained by the subtraction of the goals against from the goals for and the larger or largest difference plus, or in the event of the difference being minus then the smaller or smallest difference minus, shall be considered to be the better or best goal difference.  In the event of clubs finishing with the same pointage and with the same goal difference, the club which has scored the greater number of goals will be placed above the club which has scored the lesser number of goals.  In all other cases, the clubs concerned will be deemed to have finished in equal positions."

Accordingly and in light of the above, the Scottish Football League Management Committee today decided that in order to determine which club would participate in the First Division Play-Off Semi-Final matches in the event of Clyde F.C. and Morton F.C.’s playing records being identical, they would play deciding matches on a home and away basis. A draw to decide which club should play the first leg at home was made in the Scottish Football League offices earlier this afternoon by the League’s President, Brown McMaster and resulted in Clyde F.C. being drawn at home in the first leg with the second leg being played at Cappielow Park. The Management Committee also agreed that in such circumstances the first leg should take place on Wednesday, 30th April, 2008 with the second leg being played on Saturday, 3rd May, 2008 and in the event that the aggregate scores are equal after the second leg of these deciding matches, extra time of thirty minutes (i.e. 15 minutes each way) will take place and thereafter, if necessary, Kicks from the Penalty Mark will be taken in accordance with the Rules laid down by the International Football Association Board, which will decide the winner.

The Management Committee also decided that in such circumstances, the First Division Play-Off Semi-Final matches involving either Clyde F.C. or Morton F.C. would take place on Wednesday, 7th May, 2008 and Saturday, 10th May, 2008 with the First Division Play-Off Final 1st and 2nd Legs being re-scheduled for Wednesday, 14th and Saturday, 17th May, 2008 respectively. However, the Management Committee also decided that the other First Division Semi-Final Play-Off matches between the second highest placed club and the third highest placed club in the Second Division will take place as scheduled on Wednesday, 30th April and Saturday, 3rd May, 2008.
