Morton 3 v 2 Clyde

Sat, 4th Aug 2007 6:10pm

A battling Clyde side were cruelly denied a late goal that would have seen them grab a share of the points. Steven Masterton's free-kick into the box was missed by everyone and ended up in the back of the net but, as Clyde celebrated and Morton prepared to kick-off, the Assistant Referee, who was on the opposite side of the pitch from where the free kick was taken, intervened.

The Referee reversed his decision, concurring with his assistant who was of the opinion that Gary Arbuckle was standing in an offside position and, despite not touching ball, the assistant believed from his viewpoint that the striker was obstructing the line of vision of the home keeper.

Masterton had given The Bully Wee an early lead with a fine free-kick before Weatherson and McAllister put the home side in front. On the stroke of half-time Chris Higgins equalised with a glancing header.

It had been a good first period with chances at both ends, including a Christian Smith rocket from long range that hit the bar.

The second half was a much poorer affair with Clyde conceding the defining penalty when a Bully Wee player was adjudged to have pushed a Morton player in the area. The award was accepted gratefully and was converted by Jamie Stevenson.

Colin Hendry commented, "We did ok. There is certainly room for improvement but I felt we were worthy of a share of the points. It is especially disappointing to miss out on a point in the manner that we did, even Jim McInally was perplexed! You don't mind losing out to a great goal but it's harsh and I'll not sleep tonight because of it."
