Reid All About The Macclesfield Match

Fri, 23rd Jul 2004 12:00am

Billy Reid has given his thoughts on the the match with Macclesfield Town and other playing staff related issues to the website's Cammy Macdonald.

"I thought Gary Arbuckle was excellent tonight. I had a wee go at him after the (behind closed doors) East Stirlingshire game because I didn't think he had done enough. I had seen him before and I know what he has in his locker and it's up to me and him to bring that out. But it's early days for him though I was pleased with what he did tonight.

"Darren Sheridan is currently training with Bury at the moment but he was at Oldham Athletic last year. He is thirty-five and has been at a few clubs. He has seen round the Stadium here and likes what he has seen. He is impressed with the way we try to pass the ball about as well. We will have another look at him.

"We are still miles away from where I want us to be. But its still pre-season, and the lads have responded great for me. We are playing with a bit of shape and passing it around not to badly but I am under no illusions that there is a long way to go and really we need six or seven players in yet.

"Everyone does realise that we do not have the budget to work with that we have had the last couple of years. And as I have said, we have lost a lot of quality players and I need to replace them, but I will take my time in doing it. I still have a couple of weeks and I have a budget to work within.

"I had spoken to Ian Harty and told him that if the deal was right for Clyde Football Club then we would allow someone to speak to him. And I thought one of the deals was right for us money wise, and I honestly thought it would have gone through. But it hasn't happened and you would need to ask Ian why.

"It obviously does hinder me a little as regards signing players but Ian is a big player for the Club and one I really don't want to lose. But financially I might have to if it means I can bring in four or five experienced players. The reason he is not playing has nothing to do with him speaking to other clubs, it's purely and simply down to the fact he is carrying an ankle knock and I can't afford to take any chances with him. If he stays here he is a big player and I need to keep him fit. There is no point playing him in these games and he gets a knock.

"I thought it would have been too much for John Potter to play from the start as he has been out a long, long time. But he has taken part in pre-season and looked okay, but he did still look a bit rusty tonight. It was disappointing to lose three goals tonight especially from crosses but that was Macclesfield's strength. We tried to play the ball on the ground and pass it about".
