Defender Signs

Fri, 2nd Jan 2004 12:00am

Alan Kernaghan this morning snapped up 26-year-old defender Stuart McCluskey on a free transfer until the end of the season. McCluskey decided to leave St.Johnstone in August having been on the books at McDiarmid for nearly ten years and had since been training with Falkirk who had shown an interest in securing his services.

He was previously a regular feature in the Scotland Under-21 setup and played with Kernaghan at St.Johnstone for several seasons. The manager said:-

"Stuart has lost his way a little after leaving St.Johnstone, where things maybe became a bit too familiar for him. He knows he made the wrong decision leaving them and is desperate to make amends for lost time.

"He can play at centre half, right back and, at a push, in midfield also. He's an aggressive player and a good passer of the ball and I had no hesitation in bringing him to Broadwood.

"The injury to John Potter and my suspension meant that we made his signature a priority, but we also have another couple of options that I will be discussing with the Chairman at the weekend."

Kernaghan also revealed that the club has made an official approach to Aston Villa about extending Colin Marshall's loan deal, which currently ends in the middle of January, until the end of the season and was confident that the bid would be successful.
