Chairman'S Comment

Thu, 7th Aug 2003 12:00am

Chairman Billy Carmichael has confirmed that the club are actively trying to bring new players to the club, still including former Scotland international John O'Neil. He said today:-

"There are over 300 players available that we could go for, but the Manager has decided to go for quality rather than quantity, and that is reflected in our ongoing efforts to bring John O'Neil to Broadwood. We have spoken to the player, his agent and also Hibs FC about the possibility of him signing for Clyde."

"Alan has been allocated an amount that he can spend in wages to improve the squad and he feels that he would be better bringing in a player of O'Neil's calibre rather than 2 or 3 others. I think it would be an excellent signing for the club, however it is ambitious and we are a long way off getting the player's signature yet."

"Our defence is solid and we have good choice up front, so one key addition in midfield could make all the difference."

Mr.Carmichael also revealed that O'Neil is not the only player being pursued:-

"We also have two players coming on trial next week, one from England and another from Australia who comes very highly recommended. So while it may be frustrating that we have only added one new face to the squad so far, Alan and Billy are working hard to find players of the right standard to take us forward."

The Chairman was also positive about the capture of Andy Smith from Raith Rovers:-

"Andy Smith is a goalscorer, and we now have 5 players capable of putting the ball in the net. That's the strongest we've been in that department by far since I arrived at Clyde. We need squad players and Andy is a good one of them who provides cover if Pat Keogh picks up an injury."

On the shirt sponsorship front, Mr.Carmichael was optimistic that a deal would be concluded in the near future:-

"The club is currently negotiating with two local companies regarding shirt sponsorship, so we are hoping to be able to announce some news very soon."
