Recap

Clyde’s winless run stretched to seven matches as they earned their fourth draw in-a-row against The Spartans at New Douglas Park.

Jordan Allan, Marley Redfern, Robbie Leitch and Darren Lyon returned to the starting lineup as Ian McCall made four changes to the side that drew with Peterhead.

Clyde had the first chance of the afternoon in the seventh minute when a thrown in from Allan caught the heel of Leitch who waded into the box and powered past visiting defenders to send a shot from close range, but it went straight at Carswell.

As the match continued, a long-arching effort from the halfway line was comfortably saved for the hosts after Houston received the ball from Murdoch following Leitch’s cross. At the other end, a counter attack from Spartans fizzled out after Wall’s attempt from inside the box went wide.

With the clock reaching the half hour mark, although the visitors were dominating possession, it was the Bully Wee who were posing the most danger going forward. Redfern raced into the box to feed the ball to Allan, however, his shot was blocked by the ‘keeper. Meanwhile, a Spartans’ freekick was denied by Hemfrey, before Leitch prevented any chance of a rebound attempt.

Carswell was yet again called into action by Allan moments later when the Clyde striker muscled past a defender to place a shot goalwards, but the ‘keeper reached out to collect. However, it was the capital side who opened the scoring in the 35th minute. The Bully Wee were punished after failing to cover their box, which allowed Stowe to cut in unmarked and rifle the ball beyond Hemfrey.

Despite trailing, the hosts were determined to seek an equaliser as McKay cottoned onto a pass to direct home his header, but it was tipped over the woodwork.

A freekick then reached Waugh, but his effort was narrowly wide, whilst the following corner was cleared.

Moments after the restart, a pass by Walls found its way to Henderson on the edge of the box, but his chance flew narrowly wide.

In the 52nd minute, Clyde went agonisingly close to levelling the scoring when Leitch and Ross Lyon combined to send the ball through the box, but Rennie was unable to connect.

The visitors were gifted another opportunity around the hour mark when Booth’s freekick landed at the feet of Ritchie inside the box, but his half volley missed the target.

Three minutes later, The Bully Wee pulled a goal back courtesy of Martin Rennie. The ball was catapulted by Cuddihy and into the reach of Allan who squared to Leitch. However, he turned instead to Rennie who drilled a powerful low shot from the outskirts of the box, which bypassed Carswell and nestled into the bottom left corner.

Clyde were almost caught out again in the 70th minute when Ritchie looked to be heading goalwards, but the defence recovered to intercept the ball, while Rennie rose high to divert the resulting corner.

During the final quarter of the match, the hosts tried to create an opportunity within the box when Ross Lyon’s cross was headed back into the area by Cuddihy, but no Clyde bodies reacted to continue the attack.

With minutes of normal time remaining, The Bully Wee were seeking a late winner with constant activity in the box, but the vital connection in the final third was proving elusive. In injury time, Rennie ran towards a loose ball in the box but it was headed out of his reach, before Carswell crouched down to deny Howie’s effort from Scullion’s corner.
