Clyde’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the Premier Sports Cup were ended by Montrose this afternoon as an early goal was enough to give the visitors all three points.

Ian McCall made three changes to his side from Tuesday’s victory at Firhill with Jordan Houston, Lee Connelly and Jordan Allan coming. Barry Cuddihy, who was named in the starting XI, pulled out with an injury during the warm up and was replaced by Liam Scullion.

The Gable Endies scored the only goal of the game after five minutes when a cross was played into the centre of the box. Craig Brown was able to rise highest and sent a header off the inside of the post, before bouncing just over the line.

They almost added a second in a dominant opening period when Ali Shrive squared for Ben Maciver-Redwood six yards out but he missed the target with the goal at his mercy.

Ian McCall switched formation midway through the first half which gave Clyde a better foothold in the game but the only real chance created in the opening 45 came when Logan Dunachie knocked down Tommy Robson’s cross into the path of Jordan Allan, but his effort was held by Cammy Gill.

The Bully Wee had most of the ball and play in the second half but bar a few moments were unable to exert excessive pressure on Gill’s goal. Allan did well to shrug off the attentions of his marker before firing a shot across the face of goal.

Dunachie then pounced upon a slack back pass before seeing his effort saved by Gill, and the ‘keeper was also equal to Houston’s rebound.

Clyde should have been awarded a penalty when Aidan Quinn wiped out the legs of Marley Redfern before touching the ball, but referee Alex Shepherd chose not to point to the spot.

It was one of a bemusing number of decisions from the whistler over the afternoon, with Assistant Manager Neil Scally being shown a red card after Shepherd and his assistant failed to spot a blatant shirt pull on Darren Hynes in front of the home dugout before then penalising the Clyde man for the exact same foul.
