Recap

After a great start Clyde ended up going to their defensive well once again but this time the well ran dry. Clyde hardly managed a passing movement in the second half as Queens dominated the game and although a draw was managed it felt like a defeat to many. This performance along with other recent games from the Clyde midfield shows that they are far from the finished article.

Clyde started with a 3-4-3 formation that allowed Gilhaney to add some sparkle to the attack. It only took 2 minutes for Clyde to snatch the lead. A miscued defensive header allowed Gihaney to chip the ball onto the head of Keogh and he placed it into the empty net. If Clyde fans were expecting a feast of goals at this point they were to be sorely disappointed as Queens hadn’t come to lye down. Queens played with two big strikers up front and supported them in numbers at every opportunity throughout the game. Weatherson could have equalised but his free header from the penalty spot flew over the bar. Still Queens pressed on as Clyde’s midfield failed to click. It didn’t take long for Queens to score though. A corner found the head of former player Jim Thompson and he powerfully finished from about 12 yards. Keogh complained he was climbed upon but to no avail. For an end of season affair nobody was holding back as both sides looked to dominate and some hefty challenges were being dished out. Clyde regained the lead after about 30 minutes as Keogh returned the favour for Gilhaney. A floated cross allowed Keogh to challenge the keeper and a defender in the air and his header fell to Gilhaney to guide into an empty net once again. Clyde saw out the rest of the half relatively easily and must have hoped to press on and secure the game. How wrong that would prove to be.

Unfortunately a set of impostors appeared in Clyde strips for the second half. Once again in the opening spell Clyde could hardly get a touch of the ball. Gilhaney got the hook after only 5 minutes and Shields was brought on to try and add some more physicality up front. This made no difference as Clyde were getting beaten to the ball every time and had no option but to play it long from the back. Keogh was trying his best but was receiving very little in the way of support. Outgunned in midfield Clyde pulled off McConalogue for Cosgrove and reverted to a 3-5-2 formation to try and gain control. Clyde’s defence as usual looked as though it would cope as Halliwell wasn’t really being stretched but the attacks kept coming and Queens scored the equaliser with 15 minutes to go. A cross found the head of Weatherson and he made no mistake from close range. Clyde tried to come back immediately but Fraser’s shot was saved by the keeper with Keogh standing unmarked. It wasn’t until the last 5 minutes that Clyde came into the game but both Shields and Cosgrove snatched at good openings from the edge of the box. On their second half performance Clyde were very grateful for a share of the points.

Seeing Clyde overrun in the midfield by part-timers brings back memories of the dark days under Alex Smith. Fraser and Millen may have been having poor games but it was up to the others like Ross and Hagen to compensate. The defenders did their bit but couldn’t hold out yet again. Up front it was good to see the sharpness of Gilhaney make and take a goal. Pat Keogh also put in a great shift and should hopefully get into double figures before the end of the season. A serious look at the midfield and its formation is needed before next weeks trip to Somerset Park.

STAR RATINGS (*****)

Halliwell **** Fine stops and no rebounds kept Clyde in the game.
Potter **** Strong defensive work from the big stopper.
Mensing **** Plenty to do and did it well.
Kernaghan **** Stood firm against a big Queens attack.
Fraser ** Poor game and looked forlorn towards the end.
Ross *** Big defensive shift but offered nothing going forward.
Hagen *** Spent most of the match back-tracking the Queens midfielders.
Millen ** A struggle for the centro campista.
Keogh **** Getting back to his best and worked his socks off.
McConalogue *** Held the ball up but didn’t threaten to score.
Gilhaney *** Sharp as ever and maybe prematurely subbed.

Shields ** Struggled for most of his 40 minute spell.
Cosgrove ** Hardly shored up Clyde’s poor midfield.

REACTION

JON CONNOLLY "The last time we came here we played very well even although they beat us 2-1, and that’s two draws and a win each between the sides this season. Alan Kernaghan has done a great job here and they are second in the league which is fantastic, so from our point of view we’re delighted with that record. I felt we played really well today after a bad start and deserved our point."

BILLY REID "We knew it was going to be a difficult game today, any game we have had against Queens this season has been difficult. The disappointing thing for us was going in 2-1 up at half-time and maybe thinking we had the game won and switching off a bit. It’s up to Alan and myself to keep the players motivated. Queens have got good legs and came into the game in the second half. We had chances near the end to win the match but I think a draw is a fair result, I don’t think anyone could argue with that."

"Mark Gilhaney took a bad knock on his knee so unfortunately had to come off early, but I thought he did very well in the first half linking with Pat Keogh. He set up the first goal and scored a strikers goal for the second. We left him out last week because we felt he needed a rest but he came back today and responded well. He gets at people and gives us another option up front."

"I thought that was Pat Keogh’s best game of the season for us, in all areas; his work rate, his touch, he scored a goal – he was outstanding."

"It’s up to the out of contract players to show what they can do, and then it’s down to the Manager to make a decision."

"Alan has taken a couple of knocks in the last few weeks and he’s soldiering on, but probably the end of the season can’t come quick enough for him. Hopefully then he can recharge his batteries and go again next season."

"We spoke to Mark McLaughlin before the game. He did well last week but we decided to go with the back three that has held us in good stead this season, but he’ll get his chance and be a big player for us, no doubt about it."
